Bougainvillea is an ornamental climber and shrub. It is native to tropical South Africa and a Mediterranean favourite. There are hundreds of cultivators with different coloured flowers. It is very easy to grow in frost-free conditions. The colourful petals of Bougainvillea are in fact modified leaves or bracts, purple, red, yellow, orange or pink in colour. These flowers are white and tubular and only one inch long. Some modern cultivars also have double-bract structures and mixed colours. Since each flower is surrounded by three paper-like bracts, it is also known as the paper flower.
